It’s just another day in ancient Rome and all Pseudolus wants to do is cheat at dice and win enough cash to buy his freedom. When his lovesick master declares his affection for the virgin next door, Pseudolus sees his big chance – get the girl for his master and win his own freedom! This slapstick musical send-up of classical comedy is filled with “old situations, new complications… and a happy ending of course!”

Tony Kushner’s seminal modern epic is a story both intimate and grand, which follows the disintegration of two relationships against a backdrop of greed, conservatism and the discovery of AIDS. The play transports the audience to New York, Washington, the Kremlin, Salt Lake City, Antarctica and even to Heaven. His characters overflow from the American melting pot as the story weaves through fantasy and reality in a powerful exploration of politics, religion and sex that remains poignant today. Collectively, the two parts of Angels in America won the Pulitzer Prize (1993), two Tony Awards, two Drama Desk awards and over 200 other awards throughout the world.

In this timeless tale of public outrage and fear Miller used the circumstances of 17th century America–a society in great flux as it struggled with issues of religion and civil rights–to reflect metaphorically on his own time in the 1950s–a society disrupted in its confidence about the sanctity of civil rights by fear of Communism. America today faces many of the same challenges as we confront the specter of terrorism: how do we stand strongly in support of personal freedom in the face of our fear?

Nebraska, 1958: the world is closing in on Charlie Starkweather and Caril Fugate, teenage lovers charged with committing eleven murders in the course of a week. Under pressure to confess by dawn, facts blur and loyalties shift, and the question remains: how far will you go for someone you love? Based on the true story that inspired the films Badlands and Natural Born Killers, this musical by OBIE Award-winning playwright Kyle Jarrow (…Scientology Pageant and Gorilla Man) explores the intersection of love and desire. Love Kills was commissioned by BTW through The Playground, our new play development program. The playground is funded through a generous, anonymous donation.
